The SEO Panda Prescription: Think Like Google

For the past several weeks, just about everyone that I know has written a column about Google's Panda update. Yes, it was/is a big deal. Yes, some sites that shouldn't have been affected are being affected. Yes, some sites that are affected should have been affected. And, I'm quite certain that "on the whole," the update has been a success.

People are so busy reading all of these columns that my friends are writing that they may not be keeping their heads where they should have been, all along.

"If I Were Google"

People who have followed my columns for any amount of time know that I'm not one of those guys who reads what everyone else has to say and then writes my own version of the latest hot topic. I've pretty much maintained my same frame of mind when it comes to writing for Search Engine Watch, or overseeing search engine optimization (SEO) initiatives for my company.

That same philosophy? I try to put myself in the position of Google.

Google is not the enemy. No. Google is your friend, if you let them be.

They don't have to rank you. We're lucky to have a resource such as Google, and you're very lucky to get any amount of traffic from them.

So, would you lie to your friends? Would you pretend to be anything other than what you are? Would you try, in any way, to con them or trick them?

I hope your answer, "no, that's not how friends should be." That's exactly the point. Friends should be true to themselves and a true friend should allow you to be true to yourself.

Now, that's not to say that people don't grow to become "better." If I'm a success at all, today, it's only because I put in a lot of effort in years past to earn the right to be successful.

It didn't happen quickly. It didn't happen overnight. I didn't win the lottery.

True, some people (and businesses) win the lottery. They manage to somehow cut short some things that have taken the rest of us years to earn. For the rest of us, we must focus on what it means to "make ourselves better."

Be True To Yourself: Make Yourself (Your Web Presence) Better

While there are areas of SEO that can get quite complicated, the high level stuff really isn't that complicated.

The foundation of "who you are" (who your business is) is your website. Make it deep and meaningful.

One way of doing this is by maintaining a blog on your domain or otherwise finding ways to position yourself/your company as a thought leader within your Industry. More often than not, your blog becomes the foundation of your thought leadership.

You can also find an Industry publication and do some "off-page" SEO by writing resourceful/helpful content and earning links in your by-line.

Rules of engagement:

* Write meaningful posts.
* Help people.
* Solve problems.
* Promote these posts, socially and otherwise.

Guess what? Even if you're not writing for an industry publication, but instead writing on your own blog, you will earn links. They didn't come easy, but — in life, and in business — it's not supposed to work that way. Google wouldn't want it to be easy, either.

No trickery involved. There certainly is strategy involved. You can't just blindly go out there and start writing a bunch of crap.

Do You Completely Ignore Algorithm Updates?

No.

To be a successful SEO, we all must do a ton of reading, research, and testing. When a major change comes around, we must be prudent.

Let's look at the definition of the word "prudent":

* Discreet or cautious in managing one's activities; circumspect
* Practical and careful in providing for the future
* Exercising good judgment or common sense
* Careful about one's conduct; circumspect.

When the Panda update had a material negative impact on one of our clients, I didn't go into "freak out" mode. I thought about what this new algorithm may be having a problem with and what we could do to provide a better user experience while also addressing the core issue. My team didn't jump to any immediate conclusions.

Our advice to our client who was, legitimately, concerned about a dip in natural search traffic? We need to wait. We need to see if Google corrects some things with this Panda update (which they did), and then — after collecting more information, reading about other's experience/participating in forums/chatting with other trusted Industry friends, we were able to make an intelligent decision on a recommendation.

It was a prudent recommendation that was based mostly on understanding that what we were putting into place was something that benefitted the user and, in this manner, we believed would also benefit their presence in Google, and other search engines.

The recommendation wasn't something built entirely on "what we need to do to address this algorithm change." If you constantly chase algorithms, you'll always be reactive to changes.

If you can be a bit more prudent, and think "if I were Google," you might actually get in front of the many changes that the search engines make each year, and build a presence that should stand the test of time.

They called the program “Energy Saving Calculator”. Google has illustrated the energy consumptions in a home as different haunting. Our living rooms may be infested with "vampire" electronics that suck power even when turned off. And open chimney flues let the "ghosts" of winter steal our heat (not to mention the "monster" furnace that lives in the basement). By taking small steps to ward off these ghouls of inefficiency, you can save cold, hard cash. By one estimate, if the 80% of Americans who leave their fireplace flue open all winter all simply closed the damper, we could save over $6 billion a year.” He quoted this huge energy savings as “That's a lot of candy corn!”

If you’re still struggling to finally reach your financial independence & make a nice living from your home, then listen... The only reason why you’re failing is because you don’t have a good website marketing strategy.

Don’t have time AND money? Then you better get one or another, otherwise you’re dead.

Once your website "house" is in order through basic SEO techniques, you'll be ready to drive more traffic to it through search engine marketing, or paid search. These are the paid ads on the right-hand side of a Google search result page. Because these ads are served up based on exactly what term the user is searching and when they are searching for it, these ads are orders of magnitude more relevant and timely than other forms of online ads - such as banner ads, which are served up next to content. Furthermore, because paid search ads are typically paid only when there are clicks (cost per click), the advertiser cuts out the 99 percent that would have been wasted; in other words, if click-through rates are 1 percent, that means the other 99 percent of the impressions are wasted. So by switching from paying for impressions to paying only for clicks, approximately 99 percent of the waste is eliminated (see "This is what happens when 99% of the inefficiencies are cut out of a system").

3. SMO (Social Media Optimization)

In the new digital world where users ignore most forms of advertising as "noise," what is an advertiser to do? Most are turning to social media and social networks like Facebook, Twitter, etc. But as we have seen before, many are still applying "old world" tactics and metrics to it; in other words, buying billions of banner ad impressions on a CPM basis on Facebook - to achieve branding through "reach and frequency." At a minimum, advertisers should "click the radio button" on Facebook advertising and switch from paying by CPM to paying by CPC (paying only for the clicks they get). This will save tens of thousands of wasted ad dollars instantly (see Facebook Advertising Metrics and Benchmarks).

A more sophisticated way to use social media would be to empower users to pass along and amplify your message, or better yet, let them create their own "rave" about your product and pass that along in their own words. Their words can yield powerful insights about what they think are the key attributes of your product and why they think they are important enough to pass along. Finally, the phenomenon of social commerce occurs when "friends don't let friends do just social media"; they are so passionate about a product they not only tell their friends about it but they help their friends all the way through a purchase.

4. ROI (Return on Investment)

So, what do you get with even a few tweaks to the execution of the well-worn acronyms above? ROI! And ROI in my book doesn't mean more traffic to a website or a higher "brand affinity" score. ROI means dollars made or dollars saved. By making your content indexable and more easily found by your target customers through proper SEO, you're helping them get closer and closer to the purchase of your products. By switching from costly, impression-based media to paid search (SEM), you are eliminating lots of inefficiency and wasted media dollars. Finally, by enabling and encouraging your customers to be your loudest fans (proper SMO), you leverage genuine word-of-mouth to achieve social amplification and even social commerce for the ultimate in ROI.

Websites should link pages which have similar or relevant content. This make the search engines read these pages as a group and your website will perceive as having a lot of knowledge on the topic. Reusing Old articles for more links

Link building is one of the most important factors of Search Engine Optimization. As any good SEO expert would tell you, the best way to do this is to publish good and relevant content on your site. However with the amount of effort required in churning out relevant and good quality content it is becoming increasingly difficult to do so.

This problem can now be resolved with a little creativity and tact. All old text file articles can now be revamped to increase the back links to the site. Here are some in which you can reuse your old articles:

Basic text articles can be converted into audio. There are software’s like Ivona-text-to-speech that allows you convert your article into audio form. Once done this can then be put onto podcast directories which will give people a chance to download and listen.

Now that you already have your audio file you can easily use that audio track to build a video around it using screenshots or images. This has now become as easy putting together bits in Windows Movie Maker and you have a video ready.

Articles can also be created into software using a P.A.D creator. This would be a .exe file which once executed will provide your article to users. From a Search Engine Marketing perspective this is quite effective for the website as it gives the impression of novelty to the user.

A blog can also give you a method to reuse your articles. A blog is a great SEO tool as it generates interest among the users and can be linked to your main website. A older article can be blogged by using excerpts of the articles as “Thought for the Day” or “Daily Tips”. If your blog is about health food, you can use related articles as a “health food guide”. By giving it a different purpose and title your article can be seen in a different manner.

Exploring Blekko Part 2 (SEO tags – Inbound Links)

This is part two of the blekko series where I try to explore the much talked about blekko.com the search engine. In this post I will be discussing the SEO tag , probably one of the most talked about tags in the search engine optimization world. The search query that i have used for the analysis is “Google News”. On clicking on SEO tag users are taken to a page consisting of 5 tabs viz inbound links, crawl stats, site pages compare and duplicate content. In this post i will try to explore the various aspects of the Inbound links section. The inbound links provides demographic as well as statistical data with regards to inbound links. The interesting part of the demographic data is the bifurcation of links state-wise as well as country wise as shown in the snapshot below -

This data is especially useful to businesses catering to a specific locations and want to identify potential location specific link partners by analyzing the data for their competitors. This will give us crucial insights with regards to where we are lagging behind in terms of quality location specific links.
On scrolling further we get the inbound links data as shown in the snapshot below -

There are 5 columns of data i.e. From Host, Host Rank, Links, last and actions.
“From host data” is essentially the website from which we got a link, “host rank” is the metric that blekko uses internally to define the quality of the domain. Although not much data about this metric is available one can confidently assume “higher the value better is the link”. “Links stats” gives the number of links that a particular domain points to the website, “last” is essentially the number of days before the link was verified. With the exception of Actions all the remaining four headers are click-able and we can sort the required data in ascending or descending order. If a particular domain link is clicked then we will get the SEO data for that particular domain. Clicking on the number of links gives us the list of pages from the selected domain from which links are obtained.
The Actions column has three icons for each website listing viz compare, info and seo icons. The seo icon acts like an seo tag for the link or the domain, info icon provides the whoisdomaintools information.
The compare icon provides us with an option to compare our website with three other websites and provides URL stats (data related to only the URL that is entered) and Domain stats (data related to the entire domain). The URL stats provide us data for the following metrics -

Can be Meta tags such as the keyword tag bring High Rankings to my site?

Now that we've covered the all-important title tag and meta description tag, it's time to move on to the very misunderstood and abused meta tag, the meta keyword tag.
Everyone knows that to obtain high search engine rankings all you have to do is put the keywords that you want to rank high with into your meta tags, right? Not even close! If it were that simple, I'd certainly be out of work. How many of you reading this column have obsessed over meta tags such as the keyword tag? How many of you have tried putting every relevant keyword you could think of into this meta tag, only to have your site continue to be nearly invisible in the search engines? How many of you couldn't decide if you should put commas between the keywords? Spaces? No commas? ALL CAPS? Plurals?

What Does This Meta Tag Look Like?

If this meta tag were a child, it would be put into a foster home due to all the abuse it has received over the years! Once upon a time, in the prehistoric days of the Internet (1995?), meta keyword tags were a great little tool for the search engines to use to help them determine how to rank sites in their search results. When the engines' databases were small, this meta tag was a quick, easy method to help decide which keywords might be important on a site.
However, as always happens with anything this simple, people began to abuse it. People (spammers) began to put keywords into the meta tag that had nothing to do with the content of their site. Because they knew lots of people were searching with the keyword "sex," for instance, they'd put that word in their meta tags a number of times to bring visitors to their site, even though their site had nothing to do with sex! Personally, I don't quite understand that logic, because it brings in untargeted visitors But apparently the goal was to bring in traffic, period.

Over time, less and less weight was given to poor abused meta tags, and more and more weight was given to the actual content of the pages. Today the meta keyword tag is quietly living in its foster home and is fairly irrelevant to getting a page ranked high. If you were pressed for time and had to give up one meta tag, this would be the one to give up. To be sure, some engines still do index the words within these meta tags, but it appears that they use them as a minor supplement to the text in the body copy and title tags of your Web pages.

Should I Bother With Meta Keyword Tags?

Since the search engines use a wide variety of factors to determine site rankings, optimizing a page to rank high is a cumulative effort. You should use everything available to you that the engines might give some weight, and therefore you should certainly use meta tags (including the meta keyword tag), along with every other legitimate, acceptable technique available. At best, it may help boost your site a bit in those engines that still read them. At worst, it won't hurt your rankings (unless you brazenly keyword stuff them). I still use these meta tags on clients' Web sites, but don't bother with them on my own sites.

What Should I Put in these Meta Tags?

First let's recap what needs to be done before you attempt to create meta keyword tags (ideally these things should be done before the Web site is ever created):

Choose your relevant keywords.
Write the site's content based on these keywords.
Create a title tag using the same keywords.
Create a meta description tag as a marketing sentence, also based on these keywords.

Once you do the above things properly, putting together your meta keyword tag is a very simple procedure.

I usually begin putting the keywords I used in the title of my page in the meta keyword tag. The first words in any tag are assumed to be given more weight, so these are most important. Then I go through each paragraph of text on the page and take any important phrases that might be used in the copy and paste them into the meta keyword tag. I usually separate the phrases with a comma and no space. This is simply a personal preference. Using no commas at all in this tag is basically the same thing, since most engines appear to treat commas as a space. After I get every important word or phrase from the text on the page, I add some common misspellings of some of these same words. I know for a fact that in the past, this could bring some traffic from some engines, most notably AltaVista.

What About Keyword Repetition?

Another common abuse of meta keyword tags was -- and still is -- the repetition of words. Spammers found that if they repeated keywords enough times in this meta tag, the search engines would "think" they were relevant to the page and perhaps give it a high ranking for those keywords. Because of this abuse, too much repetition will now hurt you rather than help you. Never insert the same word twice in a row in this tag, even if you're using different variations. (Plurals, ALL CAPS, different tenses, etc.) You can use the same word in different phrases, but never use that word more than three or four times within the tag, even if you're using different variations of it.

That's about all there is to it! If everyone treated these meta tags with the type of respect they deserve and only put relevant keywords into it, perhaps we could get it out of its foster home and back to its rightful place in the family of meta tags!

Link Popularity

For years, "link popularity" and "Google PageRank" have been the talk of the town in the search engine optimization community. However, the definition of link popularity and how it differs from PageRank (PR), as well as how much effect these actually have on search engine rankings, is often misunderstood.

What is Link Popularity?

The theory goes something like this: The search engine Powers That Be have decided that if other sites are linking to your site, it must be a winner; therefore, it deserves a boost in rankings (when all else is equal). If you think about it, this makes a lot of sense. People link to good sites, not bad ones.

PageRank Does Not Equal Link Popularity

It's important to note that Google PageRank is not the same thing as link popularity. PR is actually a subset of link popularity. Whereas PR focuses strictly on the quantity and popularity of links, link popularity adds a "quality factor" into the equation. Unfortunately, many people mistakenly use the terms "link popularity" and "PageRank " interchangeably, which has served to confuse the issue further.

All major search engines place some emphasis on link popularity in their ranking algorithms. There appear to be 2 main types of links that work best to increase your link popularity: links from other sites that focus on the same keyword phrases your site focuses on, and links from relevant categories in major directories and industry-specific portals. "Free-for-all" (FFA) sites do not constitute quality links, so don't waste your $24.95 submitting your site to 500 of them. Links from sites that focus on topics that have nothing to do with your site probably won't help you win any link popularity contests, either (although they may temporarily boost your PR).

How Does Link Popularity Work?

Here's an example of how I believe link popularity works:

Let's say that Bob's Pizza Palace Website has a link to Joe's Men's Clothing store site. If the link uses the keywords "men's clothing store" in the anchor text (the clickable part), it may help Joe's link popularity a little bit for those keywords. However, Joe would benefit a lot more if the same link came from a site that was more related to Joe's site than a pizza palace. For instance, a more related link might be from a woman's clothing store, a men's shoe store or any other type of store that relates to clothing in some way.

An even higher-quality link for Joe might be from "Sam's Clothing Store Directory," which lists a whole bunch of clothing stores that can be found on the Internet. That is exactly the kind of link that the search engines would want to credit toward link popularity. Again, the key is in having that common thread between the sites.

Where Do Reciprocal Links Come In?

The other popular misconception floating around is in regards to reciprocal linking. Since so many people think that exchanging links with sites is the easiest way to get them (it may or may not be), new people learning about link popularity are under the mistaken belief that they must have links that are reciprocated on their site (e.g., "you-link-to-me-and-I'll-link-to-you"-type links). Still others are saying that reciprocal links are dead and you won't gain any benefit from them.

Both camps are wrong. You certainly don't need to get reciprocal links, but you can if you want to. Remember, it's links pointing TO your site that are the helpful ones. Links pointing FROM your site to other sites are wonderful to have because they help your visitors find related stuff, but if your site doesn't lend itself to linking to other sites, then by all means, don't do it. You need to do what's right for your company and your site visitors, first and foremost.

Should I Care About Link Popularity?

In general, there's no need for the average site to obsess over link popularity. Yes, you'll want to keep it in mind, and yes you should make sure that your site is what I like to call "link-worthy." However, from my experience (and contrary to popular belief), link popularity constitutes only a portion of most search engines' ranking algorithms. Arguably, Google places more emphasis than most other engines on incoming links at this point in time. How much these actually boost a site's ranking is debatable and truly depends on the site. It also depends on the words that are placed in the anchor text. I have found that just a few highly relevant links with strong anchor text can go a long way towards link popularity for many sites.

For sites that want to take it to the next level and are trying to rank highly with extremely competitive keywords, it may be necessary to actively seek out links from other relevant Websites. This doesn't mean you should go out and create a whole bunch of domains yourself and link them all together because it sounds easier than getting others to link to you. (Yes, that trick has been tried before!) It simply means you should look for sites that are related to your site in some way, and see if they might be interested in promoting your site to their users.

Whatever you do, do not send automatically generated link requests to any site. Most Webmasters consider them a nuisance at best and sp@m at worst. Certainly, a personal email may be welcome, and it also doesn't hurt to pick up the phone and begin a dialogue with a potential link partner. Remember, very often these links from relevant sites will bring more traffic to your site than a high search engine ranking will bring.

How To Get Linked Without Even Trying

My favorite way to get links (but the most time-consuming) is to simply have the best site on the Internet in your specific niche. Interestingly enough, if your site is well written, provides tons of useful information and is constantly updated, you often won't have to seek out links at all. Other sites will link to yours of their own volition.

This has worked for me on my High Rankings site for many years. Without actively requesting any links (other than a few major directories), hundreds of highly relevant sites have added HighRankings.com to their list of recommended sites related to SEO. Some people link to my home page, others to the main newsletter page, and still others to my forum. Some will link directly to an article or newsletter they've enjoyed, and some will ask if they can republish some on their site, while also including a link.

This is the ideal, and not every site is going to have the time or inclination to get to this stage. However, I firmly believe that any kind of site in any type of business can use this method if they are willing to work at it. I know of no other method that can even bring links from direct competitors! Personally, I'd rather spend my time creating a link-worthy site than sending out repetitive reciprocal link exchange requests...but maybe that's just me!

Your homework for this week is to think about how you can make your site so good that others will be only too willing to link to it -- without your even having to ask for it. If you can figure it out and actually spend the time implementing the strategy, eventually you won't have to worry about link popularity, reciprocal links or PageRank ever again!

The Meta Description Tag

The keywords and phrases you use in your Meta description tag don't affect your page's ranking in the search engines (for the most part), but this tag can still come in handy in your overall SEO campaigns.

What Is the Meta Description Tag?

The Meta description tag is a snippet of HTML code that belongs inside the section of a Web page. It usually is placed after the Title tag and before the Meta keywords tag, although the order is not important.

The proper syntax for this HTML tag is:

I used to believe that the purpose of the Meta description tag was twofold: to help the page rank highly for the words that were contained within it, as well as to provide a nice description in the search engine results pages (SERPs). However, today it appears that, similar to the Meta keywords tag, the information you place in this tag is *not* given any weight in the ranking algorithms of Google, and only a tiny amount of weight in Yahoo's.

In other words, whether you use your important keyword phrases in your Meta description tag or not, it won't affect the position of your page in the SERPs for the words that are important to you. In fact, you could easily leave it out altogether.

But should you?

Well, if you're already happy with the "snippets" of text that the search engines post from your page in any given search query, then there's no reason to have a Meta description tag on your pages. However, it's important to note that the snippet the engines use will vary, depending on what the searcher typed into the engine.

Let's take a step back and look at what the search engines show in the SERPs. It can get a little bit confusing, but if you try out your own searches in the various engines, you'll have a better idea of what I'm talking about. The search engines are constantly changing this sort of thing, plus they all behave in slightly different ways, as you'll see in my examples.

At Google, if you search for a site by URL like this: www.highrankings.com, the snippet you see is the first instance of text on the page. Interestingly enough, on my home page, an image alt attribute tag is the first instance of words "on the page," and that's what shows up as part of my "snippet" for this particular search. (The image is a clickable image, so this jibes with my other theory of Google indexing the words in the alt attributes of clickable images.
For this type of search, Yahoo displays the Meta description info. It's important to note that generally the only people searching using URLs are site owners trying to see if their pages are indexed. Therefore, you shouldn't worry too much about what you see under those circumstances.

So let's try something that a real person might search for when looking for what I have to offer -- how about "SEO copy"?
In Google, my Nitty-gritty handbook page shows up second in the results with the following snippet:

"... techniques: Search engine optimization (SEO) consultants who need to edit the existing copy of their clients' sites as a matter of course. ..."

Not the best of snippets, to say the least.

In this case, I don't have the phrase "SEO copy" in my Meta description tag, nor is it anywhere on the page as a complete phrase. Because of this, Google has simply found instances where the word SEO and the word copy were near each other, and used the surrounding text as the snippet.

Now, if I felt that "SEO copy" was a viable keyword phrase that people might be searching on, I may want to adjust my page accordingly so that the phrase appeared in my Meta description tag as well as somewhere in the body text. Again, this is not because it would help it to rank highly, but because I would receive a more suitable description that was more in tune with what the searcher was looking for. One can surmise that they might be more inclined to click on my listing in that case.

Let's look at Yahoo for the same phrase. They've ranked the page at #3, and used the following snippet:

"Learn SEO copywriting with Jill Whalen's special report -- The Nitty-gritty of Writing for the Search Engines."

Now that's a good snippet! Well, guess what? That's my Meta description tag for that page. Even though the exact phrase wasn't in the tag, and neither was the word "copy," Yahoo still chose to display it for this search query. I'm guessing this is because that phrase is actually nowhere on the page, other than in the Title tag. So with Yahoo, having a decent Meta description tag was very worthwhile in this instance.

More Tests

I also recently discovered that when I tested a nonsense word in the Meta description tag of a page (with the word not appearing elsewhere on the page), Google did not find it. But when I added the word to the visible text copy on the page, Google would bring up the test page when the nonsense word was searched for. Not only that, but it displayed that part of the Meta description tag where the nonsense word appeared.

In Yahoo, my nonsense-word test page was found, even if the word appeared only in the Meta description tag and nowhere else on the page. Interestingly enough, however, Yahoo didn't display the part of the tag where the word was placed. They displayed only the beginning of the description, and cut it off after about 45 words. I purposely placed my nonsense word deep into my description tag to see if it would get picked up. In this case, the word appeared as the last of 138 words in the tag. I'll probably add even more words at some point to see if there's any cutoff point where Yahoo will stop indexing.

Other Engines

I also tested a few searches at Teoma and MSN. Each engine is slightly different in how they display the Meta description tag. Teoma seems to find the words in the tag, but doesn't necessarily display them. When I searched for a unique sampling of text from one of my tags, Teoma found the page, but chose to display the first sentence on the page instead. Not surprisingly, the current MSN search worked the same as Yahoo. However, MSN's search technology preview

My new recommendation for this tag is not to worry too much about it. If you have some great call-to-action statements utilizing your keyword phrases on your Web pages, they will probably show up in your snippets at the engines. But since it's easy enough to create a compelling sentence or 2 that incorporates your main keyword phrases, you might as well do this for your Meta descriptions.

Certainly, the more control you have over your listing in the SERPs, the more clickthroughs you should see. If your Meta description tags can help with that, then it's certainly worth the time to create compelling, keyword-rich ones.

SEO and the Zen Factors

I do not get a chance to read much that isn't related to search marketing these days, but since I'm traveling more, I've been using those long plane flights to read different types of books. One of my favorites has been Dr. Wayne Dyer's "The Power of Intention," which I bought after seeing him speak on public television.

In the "The Power of Intention" every sentence has a powerful meaning that really needs to be pondered in order to get the most out of it. When I read a book that is packed with such deep concepts, I find that the best thing for me to do is read through it once without trying to grasp everything that is being said. At that point I find that I have understood the information at only a very basic level. I may know what the author is talking about, and I may not be confused by it, but I really can't verbalize it to anyone else. I'm now on my third or fourth read of Dyer's book, and am a bit more at home with the concepts he presents, but I find that with each read I get more and more out of it.

Currently, I'm reading another book on a similar topic, but it's presented in a totally different manner. This book ("The Power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle) has helped me further understand Dr. Dyer's book, just as Dyer's book has helped me understand this book. I've also realized there is so much to learn on this subject that I'm sure I could read a hundred books and never understand everything.

By now, I'm sure you're totally confused and wondering what the heck my personal reading habits have to do with SEO. Stay with me, as I do have a point! When I think about the vast information that *any* subject contains, be it SEO or personal growth, I realize that when people first get interested in something, there's a steep learning curve involved. Every day I hear from people who are just learning SEO, and they're simply not grasping what I consider the very basic concepts. For those of us who live and breathe SEO, it's sometimes difficult to step back and remember what it was like when we were first learning.

Even though SEO isn't as complicated as Zen Buddhism, it's still going to take most newbies a lot of time and study to truly understand things at a fundamental level. For those of you just starting to learn SEO, you may read some of the more ethereal stuff written on the topic (such as my "Art of SEO" article) and simply not be able to grasp it -- yet. But don't despair! If you immerse yourself in the topic, you will find that every day you understand more and more.

When practiced at the level of those of us who've been in the game for 5-10 years, SEO is in fact very Zen-like. We can look at a website and know exactly what needs to be done to make it the best it can be for the site visitors and the search engines. Often, it's easiest for us when we can just roll up our sleeves and do what we know needs to be done, rather than try to explain the whys and wherefores. Many times it's not even possible to explain exactly why we are doing a specific thing, because it simply comes from the gut. Unfortunately, many clients and even more budding SEOs aren't cool with the explanation "it just feels right"!

There will always be SEOs who need to do their work based on some logical, formulaic reasoning. These people may never be able to simply trust their own instincts. To them, it can't just "feel right," because search algorithms and how to beat them have got to have a logical explanation. However, as time marches on, search engines are becoming ever more sophisticated. The logical among us have all kinds of theories and acronyms (e.g. LSI) that supposedly explain how the engines will be determining relevancy in the future. Personally, I prefer to believe that they're simply adding a "Zen factor" to the mix!

In fact, I think I'll go meditate so that I can manifest the best title tags for my latest client's site.
